Segovia & La Granja, curiosities and places you cannot miss

Hi friend!

How are your Spanish lessons in Madrid going so far?

Today, we recommend you to visit Segovia.

Madrid, for its geographic location, offers nice possibilities if you need to take a break from the city life: you can easily take a deep breath in one of the beautiful cities of the surroundings.

Although they are not as well-known as the capital, they have a special charm for their historical and artistic context.

In less than an hour by public or private transport –the Cercanías Renfe we use to move around Madrid, also reaches Segovia several times per day- we have the opportunity to visit the city of Segovia and its surroundings, that are pure history and culture for those tourists who come to Madrid and also for Madrilenians themselves, who have a great esteem for this place and got used to enjoy their weekend trips there.

In this post we will describe the most interesting sightseeing of Segovia and La Granja.

The aqueduct
It is for sure the most iconic monument of the city. It was built during the Roman Empire –in the 2nd century to be precise- and its aim was to carry water to the city from a natural spring nearby. You will be impressed seeing the huge blocks of stone holding themselves with no fastening, simply standing one on top of another. Surrounding the aqueduct, you can enjoy the wonderful geometrical gardens.
The Jewish neighborhood
It is an ensemble of streets that spread out from the aqueduct; there you can enjoy the beautiful decorations and colors of its facades. Streets like Cervantes, Juan Bravo and at Puerta de la Luna are some references to follow.
Segovia Cathedral
If you overview the history of Spain, you will come upon this wonderful monument, built in the 16th century. In Segovia you will be able to see the last gothic cathedral to have been built in Spain, located in Plaza Mayor.
Alcazar
Almost in the outskirts of the city you can find this dream castle whose elements have been built to have the resemblance of a ship prow. Since it was built in the 12th century, it has been used for different purposes, such as royal palace, prison and military academy. Nowadays it contains the Museum of the Royal School of Artillery.
La Granja de San Ildefonso
It is a royal palace located inside the Real Sitio de San Ildefonso municipality, at about 11 kilometers from Segovia. It was built in the 18th century for king Philip V as a retreat. It’s a place full of fountains, gardens and huge spaces for escaping and it’s a perfect place to end your trip to Segovia.

Segovia definitely proves that outside big cities it’s possible to see places with a special charm and that allow you to enjoy a good day of tourism without organizing an expensive transfer from Madrid.

For all these reasons we really recommend you to visit Segovia.
